PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE

What is a Pressure Relief Valve in HVAC?

In HVAC systems, a pressure relief valve (PRV) serves as a safety device that automatically releases excess pressure to prevent equipment damage and ensure safe operation by venting surplus refrigerant vapor to a designated external area.

PRVs are specifically designed to safeguard HVAC systems against overpressure, which can arise from various issues, such as system malfunctions, fires, or excessive heat from external sources.

FUNCTION: PRVs operate using a spring-loaded mechanism that continuously monitors the internal pressure of the system. When the pressure surpasses a set safety limit, the spring is compressed, causing the valve to open and discharge the excess pressure.

LOCATION: PRVs are strategically installed on the discharge line (which carries high-pressure refrigerant) or directly on the condenser coil, as well as in chilled water systems where high pressure or clogs may occur.

The design of pressure relief valves is straightforward, so we recommend using a reputable brand like Castle, or you can choose any standard local manufacturer.
