ULTRAVOILET (UV) LAMPS

What are UV Lamps?

A UV lamp in an HVAC system refers to a specialized ultraviolet light that is installed within the air handler or ductwork. Its purpose is to eliminate bacteria, viruses, mold spores, and other microorganisms that may accumulate on coils and in the airflow, thereby enhancing indoor air quality by sanitizing the air being circulated.

The UV light emits a specific wavelength (UVC) that disrupts the DNA of microorganisms, effectively killing them.

Benefits include:

  • Prevention of mold growth on evaporator coils
  • Reduction of allergens
  • Improved system efficiency by stopping contaminant buildup
  • Contribution to cleaner air quality

Typically, these lamps are installed near the evaporator coil within the air handler or directly in the ductwork for more extensive air sanitization.

There are two primary types of UV Lamps commonly used:

  • Coil Sanitizing Lamps: These lamps are positioned near the evaporator coil to prevent the buildup of mold and bacteria.
  • Air Sanitizing Lamps: Complete UV light units that purify the air in a room or can be installed in the ductwork for broader air cleaning.
