Differential Pressure-Based Flow Meters

(Selection, Supply, Installation, Calibration, Commissioning & Lifecycle Support for HVAC & Industrial Flow Measurement)

Differential Pressure-Based Flow Meters – Supply, Engineering & Execution Support

For more than a century, engineers have measured flow by creating a small restriction in a pipe and reading the pressure difference it produces. That principle still powers some of the most widely installed meters in the world. Differential Pressure-Based Flow Meters – orifice plates, venturi tubes, flow nozzles and averaging pitot tubes paired with DP transmitters – measure water, steam, gas and compressed air across a huge range of pipe sizes, pressures and temperatures, backed by international standards.

Compress India supplies and executes complete differential pressure flow measurement solutions for HVAC and industrial applications – from primary element selection and sizing to supply, installation, impulse line work, calibration, commissioning, BMS and SCADA integration, retrofit and lifecycle support. Whether you need a DP flow meter for steam, a venturi for a chilled water header or commissioning sets for water balancing, we deliver the right system, correctly installed and verified.

  • Multi-brand supply – coordinating primary elements, DP transmitters, manifolds and accessories
  • Hydronic & process expertise – balancing accuracy, turndown and permanent pressure loss for your application
  • Installation – straight runs, orientation, impulse line routing, venting, condensate pots and insulation
  • Calibration & commissioning – element certification, transmitter calibration, zeroing and square-root configuration
  • Integration & lifecycle support – BMS, SCADA, AMC, troubleshooting and retrofit

One accountable partner for dependable flow and pressure measurement.

What Is a Differential Pressure-Based Flow Meter?

A differential pressure-based flow meter – also called a DP flow meter, differential flow meter or pressure drop flow meter – measures flow by placing a known restriction (the primary element) in the pipe and measuring the pressure difference it creates. As fluid accelerates through the restriction, its pressure falls. The size of that pressure drop is directly related to flow rate.

A complete differential pressure flow measurement system includes the primary element (orifice plate, venturi, nozzle or pitot tube), pressure tappings, impulse lines, a valve manifold and a differential pressure transmitter that converts the measured pressure difference into a flow signal.

Why DP Flow Measurement Is Used in HVAC & Industrial Systems

Proven & Well-Standardized Technology

DP flow measurement is defined by international standards such as ISO 5167. Well-designed orifice and venturi installations can be engineered by calculation, without needing flow calibration for every meter.

Suitable for Liquids, Gases & Steam

One technology covers water, chilled water, steam, natural gas, compressed air and many process fluids – a rare versatility.

Flow Measurement in Balancing & Commissioning

Fixed orifice balancing valves and commissioning sets in HVAC systems are DP flow meters. Their test points let engineers measure flow during water balancing.

Chiller Evaporator Flow Monitoring

Chillers commonly use DP across the evaporator or a dedicated element as a flow indication for protection and monitoring.

Cost-Effective for Large Pipe Sizes

For large pipes, an orifice plate or averaging pitot tube with a DP transmitter can cost significantly less than a full-bore meter.

How a Differential Pressure Flow Meter Works

1. Primary Element Creates a Restriction

An orifice, venturi throat, nozzle or pitot probe creates a known change in the flow path.

2. Velocity Increases & Pressure Drops at the Restriction

As the fluid passes through the restriction, it speeds up. By conservation of energy, its static pressure falls.

3. Pressure Measured Upstream & Downstream

Pressure tappings before and at (or after) the restriction capture the high- and low-pressure sides.

4. DP Transmitter Measures the Pressure Difference

Impulse lines carry both pressures to a DP transmitter, which measures the difference accurately.

5. Flow Calculated Using the Square Root Relationship

Because flow is proportional to the square root of differential pressure, the transmitter or control system applies square-root extraction to produce a linear flow signal.

Bernoulli's Principle & the DP Flow Equation

Relationship Between Flow and Differential Pressure

Derived from Bernoulli’s principle and continuity, the basic relationship for flow rate from differential pressure is:

Q = C \cdot \frac{\pi d^2}{4} \cdot \frac{1}{\sqrt{1-\beta^4}} \cdot \sqrt{\frac{2\\,\Delta P}{\rho}}

where Q is volumetric flow, C the discharge coefficient, d the restriction diameter, β the beta ratio, ΔP the differential pressure and ρ the fluid density. For gases and steam, an expansibility factor is also applied.

Discharge Coefficient

The discharge coefficient (C) corrects the ideal equation for real flow effects such as friction and flow contraction. Standards such as ISO 5167 provide equations for C for standard primary elements.

Beta Ratio

The beta ratio (β) is the restriction diameter divided by the pipe inside diameter. It affects DP, pressure loss, accuracy and straight run requirements.

Square Root Extraction

Since flow ∝ √ΔP, halving the flow reduces DP to one quarter. Square-root extraction – in the transmitter, flow computer or BMS – converts DP to a linear flow reading. This relationship is also why DP meters have limited turndown.

Components of a DP Flow Measurement System

Primary Element

The differential pressure primary element – orifice plate, venturi, nozzle, pitot tube, V-cone or wedge – creates the measurable DP.

Pressure Tappings

Precisely located tappings capture high- and low-side pressures, as defined by the element design or standard.

Impulse Lines

DP transmitter impulse lines carry pressure from the tappings to the transmitter. Their routing, slope and venting are critical for accuracy.

3-Valve & 5-Valve Manifolds

Manifolds isolate the transmitter, equalise pressures for zero checks and allow venting or calibration without disturbing the process.

Differential Pressure Transmitter

The transmitter measures DP and outputs a flow or DP signal, often with square-root extraction and digital communication.

Flow Computer / Indicator

For steam and gas, a flow computer or multivariable DP transmitter applies pressure and temperature compensation. Local indicators display flow and totals.

Types of Differential Pressure Flow Meters

Orifice Plate Flow Meters

An orifice plate flow meter uses a thin plate with a precisely machined hole. It is simple, economical and fully standardised – the most widely used differential pressure orifice flow meter type – but has higher permanent pressure loss.

Venturi Tube Flow Meters

A venturi tube flow meter uses a converging section, throat and gradual diverging section. It recovers most of the pressure, giving low pressure loss DP flow measurement, and tolerates shorter straight runs and some solids.

Flow Nozzles

A differential pressure flow nozzle has a smooth, curved inlet. It handles high-velocity steam and high-temperature fluids well, with pressure loss between an orifice and a venturi.

Averaging Pitot Tubes

An averaging pitot tube flow meter is a probe inserted across the pipe, sensing pressure at several points. It offers very low pressure loss, low cost for large pipes and can often be hot-tapped.

V-Cone Flow Meters

A V-cone uses a cone-shaped element centred in the pipe. It conditions the flow itself, allowing shorter straight runs and wider turndown than an orifice.

Wedge Flow Meters

A wedge element restricts flow from the top of the pipe, suiting slurries, viscous fluids and dirty liquids that could block an orifice.

Fixed Orifice Balancing Valves & Commissioning Sets

In HVAC, fixed orifice balancing valves and commissioning sets are compact DP flow meters with test points. They measure flow during water balancing using a portable DP manometer.

Orifice Plate Types & Tapping Arrangements

Concentric, Eccentric & Segmental Orifice Plates

Concentric plates suit clean liquids, gases and steam. Eccentric and segmental plates allow solids or condensate to pass in dirty or two-phase applications.

Flange Taps, Corner Taps & D–D/2 Taps

Flange taps are drilled in the orifice flanges, corner taps at the plate faces, and D–D/2 taps one pipe diameter upstream and half a diameter downstream. Each has specific discharge coefficient equations in the standards.

Orifice Carriers & Meter Runs

Orifice carriers hold the plate and tappings in one assembly. Complete meter runs include upstream and downstream pipe sections, sometimes with flow conditioners, for highest accuracy.

DP Transmitters for Flow Measurement

Conventional DP Transmitters

A conventional DP flow transmitter measures differential pressure and outputs a 4–20mA signal, with optional DP transmitter square root output for linear flow.

Multivariable Transmitters (DP, Pressure & Temperature)

A multivariable DP transmitter measures DP, static pressure and temperature, and calculates compensated mass or volumetric flow – essential for a pressure temperature compensated flow meter on steam and gas.

Integral Flow Meters with Mounted Transmitters

Integral designs mount the transmitter directly on the primary element with a built-in manifold, reducing impulse line problems and installation time.

Transmitter Range & Turndown Selection

The transmitter range is set to the DP at maximum flow. Because DP falls with the square of flow, transmitter accuracy at low DP matters – high-accuracy transmitters extend useful turndown.

DP Flow Meter Technical Specifications Explained

Pipe Size Range

Orifice plates and pitot tubes cover small to very large pipes; venturis are common from mid-size to large water mains.

Flow Range & Turndown Ratio

Typical turndown is around 3:1 to 5:1 with a single transmitter; high-accuracy or multivariable transmitters and some element types can extend this to about 10:1.

Accuracy & Repeatability

Differential pressure flow meter accuracy typically ranges from about ±0.5% to ±2% of rate for well-designed orifice and venturi installations, depending on element type, calibration and installation. Averaging pitot tubes are generally less accurate. Repeatability is typically good.

Permanent Pressure Loss

Orifice plates may lose a large share of the measured DP permanently; venturis recover most of it. This permanent pressure loss adds pump energy over the meter’s life.

Pressure & Temperature Ratings

High pressure flow meters of the DP type are available for demanding steam, gas and process duties, with ratings set by flanges, materials and transmitter limits.

Straight Run Requirements

DP flow meter straight run requirements depend on element type, beta ratio and upstream fittings – often 10–40 pipe diameters upstream for orifice plates, less for venturis and V-cones, and around 5 diameters downstream.

Output Signals & Communication Protocols

4–20mA Analog Output

The standard output for DP transmitters, linear to DP or – with square-root extraction – to flow.

HART Communication

HART adds digital diagnostics, configuration and multivariable data over the 4–20mA loop.

Modbus RTU & Modbus TCP

Modbus transmitters and flow computers deliver flow, totals, pressure and temperature to BMS and SCADA.

BACnet Integration via Gateways

DP flow data can be brought into BACnet building management systems through gateways or controllers.

Foundation Fieldbus & Profibus

Process plants often use Foundation Fieldbus or Profibus transmitters for full digital integration.

Standards for DP Flow Measurement

ISO 5167

ISO 5167 flow measurement defines the design, installation and calculation of orifice plates, nozzles, venturi nozzles and venturi tubes in full, circular pipes. Meters built to ISO 5167 can be sized by calculation with known uncertainty.

ASME MFC-3M

ASME MFC-3M is the American standard covering measurement of fluid flow in pipes using orifice, nozzle and venturi elements, widely used in projects following ASME practices.

Sizing Calculations as per Standards

We prepare sizing calculations to the applicable standard – determining bore, beta ratio, DP at maximum flow, pressure loss and straight run needs – for review and approval.

DP Flow Meters in HVAC Applications

An HVAC differential pressure flow meter remains a practical, economical choice for many hydronic duties – particularly where commissioning sets, large pipes or plant equipment are involved.

Chilled Water Flow Measurement

A differential pressure flow meter for chilled water – such as a venturi on a main header – provides reliable flow data with low pressure loss. A chilled water DP flow meter is often chosen where budget and pipe size favour DP technology.

Condenser Water Flow Measurement

Orifice plates, venturis and averaging pitot tubes on condenser water lines verify chiller condenser flow and cooling tower distribution.

Chiller Evaporator & Condenser DP-Based Flow Monitoring

Many chillers use DP across the evaporator and condenser, or dedicated DP elements, for flow indication and low-flow protection.

Variable Primary Flow Bypass Control

DP-based flow signals across chiller evaporators or dedicated elements are commonly used to control minimum-flow bypass valves in variable primary plants.

Water Balancing with Commissioning Sets

Fixed orifice commissioning sets and balancing valves let TAB engineers measure flow at branches, risers and AHUs using a portable DP manometer.

Hot Water Heating Systems

DP flow meters measure heating water flow in boiler plants and distribution systems, including high-temperature hot water.

DP Flow Meters for Industrial & Process Applications

An industrial differential pressure flow meter is one of the most versatile tools in process measurement.

Steam Flow Measurement

A differential pressure steam flow meter – orifice, nozzle or venturi with a multivariable transmitter – is a standard DP flow meter for steam, providing compensated mass flow for boiler efficiency and steam costing.

Compressed Air & Gas Flow Measurement

A DP flow meter for compressed air or DP flow meter for gas – using orifice plates or averaging pitot tubes with compensation – supports leak detection, energy accounting and process control. This is the core of the differential pressure gas flow meter and differential pressure air flow meter market.

Process Cooling Water

A DP flow meter for water on process cooling lines verifies flow to heat exchangers and equipment.

Boiler Feed Water

Orifice and nozzle meters measure feed water at high temperatures and pressures, supporting drum level control and boiler efficiency.

Oil, Chemical & High-Temperature Fluids

With suitable materials and seals, DP meters measure oils, chemicals and high-temperature fluids where other technologies may be limited.

Benefits of DP-Based Flow Meters

Proven, Standardized Technology

Designed and calculated to ISO 5167 and ASME MFC-3M, with decades of field experience.

No Moving Parts in the Primary Element

Orifice plates, venturis and pitot tubes have no moving parts in the flow.

Suitable for Liquids, Gases & Steam

One technology, with the right element and transmitter, covers almost any clean fluid.

Works at High Temperatures & Pressures

Primary elements can be built for very high pressures and temperatures, with transmitters mounted remotely.

Low Cost for Large Pipe Sizes

Orifice plates and averaging pitot tubes cost relatively little even on large pipes.

Wide Availability of Primary Elements & Transmitters

Elements, transmitters and spares are widely available, with many manufacturers and service providers.

Limitations of DP-Based Flow Meters

Limited Turndown Ratio

Because flow varies with the square root of DP, low flows produce very small DP. Typical turndown is limited compared with electromagnetic or ultrasonic meters.

Permanent Pressure Loss & Pumping Energy

Orifice plates cause significant permanent pressure loss, increasing pump energy over the life of the system. Venturis and pitot tubes reduce this.

Long Straight Run Requirements

Orifice plates in particular need long straight runs, which can be difficult in crowded plant rooms.

Wear & Erosion of Orifice Edges

Worn or damaged orifice edges change the discharge coefficient and cause reading errors over time.

Impulse Line Blockage, Leakage & Air Traps

Blocked, leaking or air-locked impulse lines are the most common cause of DP flow errors.

Accuracy Affected by Installation Conditions

Poor straight runs, wrong tapping orientation or incorrect sizing data directly affect accuracy.

DP Flow Meter vs Electromagnetic Flow Meter

ParameterDP Flow MeterElectromagnetic Flow Meter
FluidsLiquids, gases and steamConductive liquids only
TurndownLimited (about 3:1–10:1)Wide (often 100:1)
Pressure lossModerate to high (element-dependent)Negligible
Straight runsLongerShorter
High temperature / pressureVery capableLimited by liner
Cost at large sizesLowerHigher

In the DP flow meter vs electromagnetic flow meter decision for chilled water, magmeters usually win on turndown, accuracy and energy. For steam, gas and high-temperature duties, DP meters are often the better or only option.

DP Flow Meter vs Ultrasonic Flow Meter

Ultrasonic meters offer wide turndown, no pressure loss and, in clamp-on form, installation without cutting the pipe. DP meters are more established for steam and gas, cope with extreme temperatures and pressures, and are standardised by calculation. For clean water retrofits, ultrasonic meters are often preferred; for steam and process gas, DP meters remain dominant. That is the essence of the DP flow meter vs ultrasonic flow meter choice.

DP Flow Meter vs Vortex Flow Meter

Vortex meters measure the frequency of vortices shed from a bluff body, offering better turndown than DP meters and no impulse lines. DP meters handle larger sizes, a wider range of conditions and are fully standardised. Both are common for steam; the best choice depends on size, turndown and installation.

Orifice Plate vs Venturi Tube

ParameterOrifice PlateVenturi Tube
Permanent pressure lossHighLow
Straight run needsLongerShorter
Tolerance to solidsLowBetter
Size and weightCompactLonger and heavier
CostLowHigher
Best forGeneral duty, smaller lines, gases and steamLarge water lines, low head loss

The orifice vs venturi flow meter decision usually comes down to lifetime pump energy versus first cost. On large, continuously running chilled water headers, a venturi’s lower pressure loss often pays back its higher price.

When Is a DP Flow Meter the Right Choice?

Steam & Gas Flow Measurement

For saturated and superheated steam, fuel gas and compressed air, a DP meter with a multivariable transmitter is a proven, cost-effective solution.

High-Temperature & High-Pressure Applications

Where temperatures and pressures exceed the limits of other meter types, DP elements with remote transmitters remain reliable.

Large Pipe Sizes on a Budget

Orifice plates and averaging pitot tubes offer economical measurement on large pipes.

Balancing & Commissioning Measurement Points

In HVAC, fixed orifice commissioning sets provide permanent, low-cost measurement points for water balancing and diagnostics.

DP Flow Meter Sizing & Selection Guide

Correct differential pressure flow meter sizing and differential pressure flow meter selection balance accuracy, turndown and lifetime pumping cost.

Selecting the Right Primary Element

Choose the element for the fluid, pipe size, required accuracy, acceptable pressure loss and available straight run – orifice for general duty, venturi for low loss, nozzle for high-velocity steam, pitot tube for large pipes and retrofits.

Beta Ratio Selection

Beta ratio is typically kept within the range allowed by the standard – for orifice plates, commonly around 0.2 to 0.75. Mid-range values usually give the best balance of DP, accuracy and straight run needs.

Differential Pressure Range Selection

The DP at maximum flow is chosen high enough for good low-flow resolution, but low enough to limit pressure loss – for water, often in the range of tens of kPa.

Permanent Pressure Loss Evaluation

Estimate permanent pressure loss at design flow and its effect on pump energy. On continuously running systems, a low-loss element can save substantial energy.

Transmitter Selection

Select a transmitter with range matched to maximum DP, high accuracy at low DP for better turndown, and multivariable capability where compensation is required.

Sizing Example for a Chilled Water Venturi

This is an illustrative example; final selection follows a full calculation to the applicable standard.

  • Service: 1,000 TR chilled water header at 5.5 K delta-T
  • Maximum flow: roughly 550 m³/h in a DN300 pipe
  • Element: classical venturi tube, chosen for low permanent pressure loss on a continuously running header
  • Beta ratio: about 0.5–0.6, selected to give a DP of around 25 kPa at maximum flow
  • Permanent pressure loss: typically only a small fraction of the measured DP for a venturi – a few kPa
  • Turndown check: at 30% flow, DP falls to about 9% of full scale – still measurable with a high-accuracy transmitter
  • Transmitter: DP transmitter ranged to about 25 kPa, square-root output, with HART or Modbus to the BMS

DP Flow Meter Installation Guidelines

Correct differential pressure flow meter installation is essential – most DP measurement errors come from installation, not the instrument.

Straight Pipe Length Requirements (Upstream & Downstream)

Straight runs depend on element type, beta ratio and upstream fittings. Orifice plates may need 10–40 diameters upstream and around 5 downstream; venturis, V-cones and flow-conditioned runs need less. We check requirements against the applicable standard.

Flow Conditioners

Where straight runs are limited, flow conditioners upstream of the element reduce swirl and profile distortion, allowing shorter meter runs.

Correct Orientation of Primary Elements

Orifice plates must face the correct way, with the sharp edge upstream. Venturis, nozzles and pitot tubes must be installed in the marked flow direction and properly centred.

Pressure Tapping Orientation for Liquids, Gases & Steam

For liquids, tappings are usually on the side of horizontal pipes to avoid air at the top and sediment at the bottom. For gases, tappings are on top so condensate drains away. For steam, side tappings with condensate pots are common.

Impulse Line Routing, Slopes & Venting

Impulse lines are kept short, sloped continuously – downward to the transmitter for liquids, upward for gases – and fitted with vents and drains. Both lines are routed together to keep them at the same temperature.

Condensate Pots for Steam Service

Condensate pots keep impulse lines filled with water at equal heads, protecting the transmitter from live steam and ensuring stable readings.

Manifold & Transmitter Mounting

Three- or five-valve manifolds are mounted with the transmitter in an accessible, vibration-free location, below the tappings for liquids and above for gases.

Insulation for Chilled Water Lines

Chilled water elements and impulse lines are insulated to prevent condensation, keeping manifolds and transmitters accessible.

Calibration, Testing & Commissioning

Primary Element Inspection & Certification

Orifice bore, edge sharpness, flatness and venturi dimensions are checked against manufacturing certificates and the sizing calculation.

DP Transmitter Calibration

Transmitters are calibrated across their range and set to the calculated DP at maximum flow – a key step in differential pressure flow meter calibration.

NABL-Accredited Calibration

Where required, transmitters and flow elements are calibrated at NABL-accredited facilities with traceable certificates.

Zero Check & Equalizing Through the Manifold

The manifold equalises both sides to check and set the transmitter zero under actual line pressure.

Square Root & Range Configuration

Square-root extraction, low-flow cut-off, units, damping and flow range are configured in the transmitter or control system.

Signal Loop & BMS Point Testing

Outputs and communication are tested end to end with BMS or SCADA, confirming correct flow values and alarms.

BMS & SCADA Integration

Analog & HART Signal Integration

4–20mA signals, with HART for diagnostics, connect to BMS controllers, PLCs and DCS systems.

Modbus / BACnet Data Integration

Energy Dashboards

Flow data feeds dashboards for chiller plant TR and kW/TR, steam costing and compressed air consumption.

Maintenance & AMC for DP Flow Meters

Impulse Line Flushing & Venting

Impulse lines are periodically flushed, vented or drained to clear blockages, air and condensate.

Orifice Plate Inspection & Replacement

Orifice plates are inspected for edge wear, erosion, deposits and bending, and replaced when needed.

Transmitter Zero Checks & Recalibration

Transmitters are zero-checked through the manifold and recalibrated at agreed intervals.

Manifold & Valve Maintenance

Manifold valves are checked for passing or leaking, and repaired or replaced.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

Incorrect or Unstable Flow Readings

Caused by poor straight runs, wrong configuration, impulse line problems or incorrect sizing data. We trace each systematically.

Blocked or Leaking Impulse Lines

Blockages or leaks distort measured DP. Flushing, repairs and correct routing fix them.

Air or Gas Trapped in Liquid Impulse Lines

Trapped air causes offset and unstable readings. Correct slopes and venting prevent it.

Orifice Plate Wear, Damage or Wrong Orientation

Worn edges, bent plates or reversed installation cause significant errors. Inspection and correction restore accuracy.

Transmitter Zero Drift

Periodic zero checks through the manifold detect and correct drift.

Low Flow Measurement Errors (Turndown Limits)

At low flows, DP becomes very small and errors rise. Range adjustment, a higher-accuracy transmitter or an alternative technology may be needed.

Signal Loss to BMS

Wiring, configuration or protocol issues are tested and corrected end to end.

Retrofitting & Upgrading DP Flow Measurement

Replacing Orifice Plates with Low-Loss Elements

Replacing high-loss orifice plates with venturis or other low-loss elements can cut pump energy on continuously running systems.

Upgrading to Multivariable Transmitters

Multivariable transmitters add pressure and temperature compensation for steam and gas, improving accuracy and simplifying installation.

Replacing DP Meters with Electromagnetic or Ultrasonic Meters

For water and chilled water, replacing DP meters with electromagnetic or ultrasonic meters can improve turndown, accuracy and energy efficiency.

Hot-Tap Installation of Averaging Pitot Tubes

Averaging pitot tubes can often be installed on live pipes by hot-tapping, adding flow measurement without shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is a differential pressure-based flow meter?

It is a flow meter that places a known restriction in the pipe and measures the pressure difference it creates. The differential pressure is used to calculate flow rate.

Q2. How does a DP flow meter work?

Fluid accelerates through the primary element and its pressure falls. A DP transmitter measures the pressure difference across the element, and square-root extraction converts it into flow rate.

Q3. What is the relationship between differential pressure and flow?

Flow is proportional to the square root of differential pressure. Doubling the flow increases DP about four times.

Q4. What are the types of DP flow meters?

Orifice plates, venturi tubes, flow nozzles, averaging pitot tubes, V-cone and wedge meters, and – in HVAC – fixed orifice balancing valves and commissioning sets.

Q5. What is the difference between an orifice plate and a venturi meter?

An orifice plate is a thin plate with a hole: simple and economical, but with higher pressure loss and longer straight runs. A venturi has a smooth converging–diverging shape, recovering most pressure and needing shorter straight runs, at a higher cost.

Q6. What is an averaging pitot tube?

It is a probe inserted across the pipe that senses pressure at several points to measure average velocity. It has very low pressure loss, is economical on large pipes and can often be hot-tapped.

Q7. What is the beta ratio of an orifice plate?

The beta ratio is the orifice bore diameter divided by the pipe inside diameter. It affects DP, pressure loss, accuracy and straight run requirements.

Q8. What is the turndown ratio of a DP flow meter?

Typically around 3:1 to 5:1 with a single transmitter, extendable to about 10:1 with high-accuracy or multivariable transmitters and some element types.

Q9. What is permanent pressure loss in DP flow meters?

It is the part of the pressure drop not recovered downstream of the element. It adds to pump energy – high for orifice plates, low for venturis and pitot tubes.

Q10. Can DP flow meters measure steam and gas flow?

Yes. With pressure and temperature compensation – often through a multivariable transmitter – DP meters are widely used for steam, gas and compressed air.

Q11. Are DP flow meters used in HVAC chilled water systems?

Yes – in commissioning sets, fixed orifice balancing valves, chiller DP flow monitoring and venturis on large headers.

Q12. What is a commissioning set in HVAC?

A commissioning set combines a fixed orifice flow measuring device with a regulating valve. It lets engineers measure and set flow during water balancing.

Q13. How much straight pipe is required for an orifice plate?

It depends on beta ratio and upstream fittings – often 10–40 diameters upstream and around 5 downstream. The applicable standard gives exact values.

Q14. What is a 3-valve manifold used for?

It isolates the transmitter from the process and equalises high and low sides for zero checks and calibration without removing the transmitter.

Q15. What is ISO 5167?

ISO 5167 is the international standard for measuring fluid flow in full, circular pipes using orifice plates, nozzles, venturi nozzles and venturi tubes, covering design, installation and calculation.

Q16. What is the difference between a DP flow meter and an electromagnetic flow meter?

DP meters measure liquids, gases and steam but have limited turndown and some pressure loss. Electromagnetic meters measure only conductive liquids, with wide turndown and negligible pressure loss.

Q17. What are common problems with DP flow meters?

Blocked or leaking impulse lines, trapped air, worn or reversed orifice plates, transmitter zero drift, low-flow errors and signal issues.

Q18. How often should DP flow meters be calibrated?

Transmitters are commonly calibrated annually or as site procedures require, with regular zero checks. Primary elements are inspected periodically for wear and damage.

Q19. What is the price of a DP flow meter in India?

Price depends on the primary element, size, materials, transmitter and accessories. Contact Compress India for current, itemised pricing.

Q20. What information is needed for a DP flow meter quotation?

Fluid type, flow range, pressure and temperature, pipe size and material, straight runs, preferred element, transmitter requirements, calibration needs and scope.
