Balanced Ventilation Systems
(Design, Supply, Installation, Commissioning, Service & AMC for Balanced & Energy Recovery Ventilation)
Design, Supply, Installation, Commissioning, Service & AMC for Balanced & Energy Recovery Ventilation
Healthy buildings need two things at the same time: fresh air coming in and stale air going out. Supply-only systems push air in, while exhaust-only systems pull air out. Each solves half the problem and creates new ones, such as pressure imbalance, drafts, doors that are hard to open, and wasted air conditioning energy.
Balanced Ventilation Systems solve both halves together. Matched supply and exhaust fans bring in filtered fresh air and remove stale air in equal amounts, keeping the building at neutral pressure. With heat or energy recovery, the outgoing air pre-cools and dries the incoming fresh air, cutting AC load significantly. Compress India designs, supplies, installs, commissions, and maintains balanced and energy recovery ventilation for offices, schools, hospitals, hotels, homes, and green buildings.

What Is a Balanced Ventilation System?
A balanced ventilation system is a mechanical supply and exhaust ventilation system that brings fresh outdoor air into a building and removes stale indoor air in roughly equal quantities. Dedicated supply and exhaust fans move the two air streams through separate ducts, keeping the building pressure neutral or slightly positive.
Most balanced mechanical ventilation systems include a heat or energy recovery core. As the two air streams pass each other without mixing, heat, and in ERVs also moisture, transfers from one stream to the other. In India's hot, humid climate, this means the cool, dry exhaust air pre-cools and dehumidifies the incoming fresh air, reducing the load on air conditioning.
Also called a balanced air ventilation system, balanced pressure ventilation system, or pressure neutral ventilation system, it offers the most complete and energy-efficient approach to fresh air.
Why Balanced Ventilation Matters
Controlled Fresh Air In & Stale Air Out
Balanced ventilation delivers the right amount of fresh air and removes the right amount of stale air, in a controlled way.
Neutral Building Pressure
Equal supply and exhaust CFM keeps the building pressure neutral, avoiding drafts, whistling doors, and uncontrolled infiltration.
Lower Energy Loss with Heat & Energy Recovery
Recovery cores and wheels reclaim energy from exhaust air, reducing the cost of conditioning fresh air.
Better Indoor Air Quality & Comfort
Filtered fresh air, controlled humidity, and lower CO₂ create a healthier, more comfortable indoor environment.
How a Balanced Ventilation System Works
Supply Fan Bringing in Filtered Fresh Air
The balanced ventilation supply fan draws outdoor air through a fresh air intake louver and filters.
Exhaust Fan Removing Stale Air
The balanced ventilation exhaust fan extracts stale air from the building.
Equal Supply & Exhaust Airflow
Both fans are set to deliver balanced airflow, maintaining equal supply and exhaust airflow.
Heat & Moisture Transfer in the Recovery Core
Inside the air to air heat exchanger, heat and moisture pass between the two streams without the air mixing.
Air Distribution to Occupied Spaces
Conditioned fresh air is delivered through ducts to supply air diffusers in occupied rooms.
Exhaust from Toilets, Kitchens & Stale Areas
Stale air is extracted through exhaust air grilles from toilets, pantries, and other stale areas, then discharged through an exhaust air louver.
Main Components of a Balanced Ventilation System
Supply & Exhaust Fans (EC)
Balanced ventilation EC fans offer efficient, variable speed operation for both air streams.
Heat / Energy Recovery Core or Wheel
A plate core or rotary wheel transfers energy between the air streams.
Air Filters
Balanced ventilation filtration, using pre-filters and fine filters, protects the core and delivers filtered fresh air ventilation.
Fresh Air Intake & Exhaust Louvres
Weatherproof louvres manage intake and discharge, placed well apart to prevent cross-contamination.
Supply & Exhaust Ductwork
Separate duct networks carry supply and exhaust air as part of a ducted balanced ventilation system.
Diffusers & Exhaust Grilles
Diffusers distribute fresh air, while grilles collect stale air.
Motorized & Bypass Dampers
Balanced ventilation dampers control airflow, and bypass dampers allow free cooling when outdoor conditions are favourable.
Controls & Sensors
Controllers manage fan speeds, bypass, alarms, and sensor-based ventilation.
Types of Balanced Ventilation Systems
Balanced Ventilation Without Heat Recovery
Separate supply and exhaust fans, known as a supply fan and exhaust fan system, balance airflow without energy recovery. This is suitable where budgets are limited or recovery is not practical.
Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRV)
A heat recovery ventilator transfers heat only between air streams. An HRV ventilation system, sometimes called HRV balanced ventilation or a balanced HRV system, suits drier climates.
Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV)
An energy recovery ventilator transfers both heat and moisture. An ERV ventilation system, or balanced ERV system, is ideal for humid climates like most of India.
Rotary Heat Recovery Wheel Systems
Rotating wheels transfer heat, and in desiccant-coated versions also moisture, with high efficiency. They are common in AHUs and large systems.
Plate Heat Exchanger Systems
Fixed plate cores transfer heat with no moving parts and very low cross-leakage.
Run-Around Coil & Heat Pipe Systems
Run-around coils and heat pipes transfer heat between separated air streams where cross-contamination must be avoided completely, such as in hospitals and labs.
Ceiling-Mounted ERV Units
Compact ceiling ERVs suit offices, homes, and small commercial spaces.
DOAS & AHUs with Integrated Energy Recovery
Dedicated outdoor air systems and AHUs with built-in recovery wheels handle large fresh air volumes efficiently.
Decentralised Room Ventilation Units
Wall-mounted units provide balanced ventilation with recovery for individual rooms, without central ducting.
Balanced vs Supply vs Exhaust Ventilation
- Balanced Ventilation: Supply and exhaust fans run together with neutral pressure, often with energy recovery.
- Supply Ventilation: Fans push air in and create positive pressure, with no recovery.
- Exhaust Ventilation: Fans pull air out and create negative pressure, drawing unfiltered air through gaps.
- Filtration: Balanced and supply systems filter incoming air; exhaust-only systems cannot.
- Energy Efficiency: Balanced systems with recovery are the most energy efficient.
When comparing balanced ventilation vs supply ventilation, balanced ventilation vs exhaust ventilation, or balanced ventilation vs natural ventilation, balanced systems offer the best control and efficiency. Note that when comparing balanced ventilation vs HRV or vs ERV, HRVs and ERVs are types of balanced ventilation with recovery, not alternatives to it.
HRV vs ERV – Which Is Better?
- Transfer: HRVs transfer heat only; ERVs transfer heat and moisture.
- Humidity: ERVs reduce humidity brought in with fresh air, which is critical in humid climates.
- Climate: HRVs suit dry or cold climates; ERVs suit hot and humid climates.
- AC Load: ERVs reduce both sensible and latent load on AC.
- Best For: ERVs for most Indian cities, especially coastal ones like Mumbai; HRVs for drier regions.
When comparing HRV vs ERV for India, ERVs are usually the better choice.
Rotary Wheel vs Plate Heat Exchanger
- Efficiency: Rotary wheels typically offer higher recovery efficiency.
- Moisture Transfer: Desiccant wheels transfer moisture; standard plate cores transfer heat only, while membrane plates can transfer some moisture.
- Moving Parts: Wheels have motors and belts; plates have no moving parts.
- Cross-Leakage: Plates have lower cross-leakage than wheels.
- Best For: Wheels for large AHUs and high-efficiency needs; plates for smaller units and applications needing airstream separation.
Why ERVs Suit the Indian Climate
High Humidity & Latent Load of Fresh Air
Outdoor air in much of India is hot and humid, and removing its moisture places a heavy load on AC systems.
Reducing AC Load on Fresh Air
ERVs pre-cool and dehumidify incoming air using exhaust air, cutting fresh air cooling load significantly.
Better Indoor Humidity Control
By limiting moisture entering with fresh air, ERVs support balanced ventilation humidity control and comfort.
