What is a Solenoid Valve in HVAC?

A solenoid valve is an electromechanical device commonly used to regulate the flow of liquids or gases. These valves are prevalent in various applications, especially in refrigeration and air conditioning systems, where their primary role is to control the flow of refrigerant by turning it on and off.

Solenoid valves fall under the category of automation valves, as they operate using an external power source. They are available in 220V AC and 12V or 24V DC configurations to suit different HVAC industry applications.

Key Functions of Solenoid Valves:

• On/Off Control: Crucial for initiating and halting the flow of refrigerant in refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
• Refrigerant Distribution: Ensure refrigerant is directed to essential components like the compressor and condenser.
• System Cycling: When cooling is not required, the valve can close and redirect refrigerant to a suction valve instead of the condenser.
• Liquid Line Placement: Often installed in the liquid line near the expansion valve to manage refrigerant flow to the evaporator.
