What Is a Ducted Air Conditioner?
A ducted air conditioner is a concealed air conditioner whose indoor unit is hidden above the false ceiling or in a service area. Cool air travels through a network of ducts to diffusers in one or more rooms, while an outdoor unit releases the heat outside.
In India it is also called a ductable AC unit, ceiling concealed air conditioner or concealed split AC. Because only slim grilles are visible, ducted air conditioning units are the preferred choice for premium homes, offices, showrooms and hotels where interior design matters as much as cooling.
How a Ducted AC Works
A ducted AC system uses the same refrigeration cycle as a split AC, but distributes the cooled air through ductwork instead of blowing it directly from a visible indoor unit.
Concealed Indoor Unit Above the False Ceiling
The ductable AC indoor unit sits above the false ceiling, in a loft or in a utility area. Its blower draws in return air, passes it over the evaporator coil and pushes it into the supply ducts.
Supply Ducts Delivering Cool Air to Each Room
Insulated supply ducts carry conditioned air to diffusers in each room or zone. Duct sizes are calculated so every space receives the right airflow.
Return Air Path Back to the Indoor Unit
Room air returns to the indoor unit through return grilles and a return duct or ceiling plenum, completing the air circuit.
Outdoor Unit Releasing Heat
The ducted air conditioning outdoor unit contains the compressor, condenser and fan. It rejects the heat absorbed indoors and is placed on a terrace, ledge or service area.
Thermostat & Zone Control
A wall thermostat or wired controller sets the temperature. With zoning, motorised dampers and room thermostats let different rooms run at different settings.
Main Components of a Ducted AC System
Ducted Indoor Unit (Blower & Evaporator Coil)
The indoor unit houses a powerful blower and evaporator coil, designed to push air through ductwork against a set static pressure.
Air Filters
Filters at the return side trap dust and particles. Higher-grade filters can be added for cleaner indoor air.
Supply & Return Ductwork
The HVAC ducting system includes supply ducts to rooms and return ducts or plenums back to the unit, made from GI sheet, pre-insulated panels or flexible ducts.
Diffusers & Grilles
Linear slot, square or round diffusers deliver air into rooms, while return grilles draw it back. Their selection affects comfort, noise and appearance.
Volume Control Dampers
Dampers in the ductwork balance airflow between rooms so each space gets the right amount of cooling.
Outdoor Unit (Compressor & Condenser)
The outdoor unit contains the compressor, condenser coil and fan. Inverter compressors adjust output to match demand.
Thermostats & Controls
Wired controllers, room thermostats, zoning controllers and Wi-Fi modules give convenient control, scheduling and monitoring.
Types of Ducted AC Units
Ducted air conditioning units come in several types, and the right one depends on the size of the space, the number of rooms and the building's HVAC design.
Ducted Split AC Units
A ducted split AC unit (also called a ductable split air conditioner or split ducted air conditioner) pairs a concealed indoor unit with a separate outdoor unit. Capacities typically range from 1.5 to 20 ton, making it the most common ducted AC for home and office use.
Ducted Packaged Units (Rooftop & Floor Mounted)
Packaged units combine the compressor, coils and blower in one cabinet placed on the roof or floor, with ducts running to the conditioned area. They suit large halls, showrooms, factories and commercial floors.
Inverter Ducted AC Units
An inverter ducted air conditioner varies compressor speed to match the load, saving energy and maintaining steady temperatures. It is ideal for homes and offices with changing occupancy.
VRF / VRV Ducted Indoor Units
VRF ducted indoor units connect to a central VRF outdoor system. Each ducted unit serves a zone or group of rooms, while the building shares one efficient outdoor plant, which is common in corporate offices, hotels and premium residences.
Chilled Water Ducted FCUs
In buildings with a central chiller plant, ducted fan coil units use chilled water to cool the air. They are used in malls, hospitals, IT parks and large commercial complexes.
Zoned Ducted AC Systems
Zoned systems use motorised dampers and room thermostats so one ducted unit can cool several rooms at different temperatures, switching off rooms not in use.
Low, Medium & High Static Ducted Units
Choosing the right static pressure is one of the most important decisions in ducted AC design, and one of the most commonly overlooked.
What Is External Static Pressure (ESP)?
External static pressure is the resistance the blower must overcome to push air through ducts, filters, dampers and diffusers. It is measured in Pascals (Pa). Longer ducts, more bends and more outlets increase the static pressure needed.
Low Static Units for Short Duct Runs
Low static units, typically about 10–50 Pa, are slim and quiet. They suit short duct runs serving one or two rooms, such as a bedroom with an adjacent dressing area or a single cabin, and are often installed in bulkheads above wardrobes or corridors.
Medium & High Static Units for Longer Ducts
Medium static units (about 50–100 Pa) handle moderate duct lengths across several rooms. High static units (about 100–250 Pa or more) push air through long duct networks in large homes, offices, halls and commercial floors.
Choosing the Right Static Pressure
An undersized static unit leads to weak airflow and uneven cooling in far rooms. An oversized unit can cause noise and wasted energy. Our engineers calculate duct resistance and select the correct static pressure for every project.
Ducted AC Capacity Guide – How Many Tons Do You Need?
Common Ducted AC Capacities
- 1.5 – 2 Ton: One large room or a bedroom with an attached area.
- 2 – 3 Ton: A 2 BHK apartment or a small office with a few cabins.
- 3 – 5 Ton: A 3–4 BHK apartment, a penthouse floor or a medium office.
- 5 – 11 Ton and above: Villas, corporate floors, showrooms and restaurants.
- 15 – 20 Ton and above: Large commercial areas, halls and banquet spaces.
Area vs Tonnage Chart
| Area (sq ft) | Typical Space | Recommended Ducted AC Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 150–250 | Bedroom with dressing area | 1.5–2 ton |
| 400–600 | 2 BHK living and bedrooms, small office | 3 ton |
| 600–900 | 3 BHK, medium office | 4–5 ton |
| 900–1,500 | Villa floor, showroom | 5.5–8.5 ton |
| 1,500–2,500 | Corporate floor, restaurant | 8.5–15 ton |
| 2,500+ | Large commercial area | Multiple units or VRF / packaged system |
These figures are indicative for a 10 ft ceiling and normal load. Every ducted project needs a detailed heat load calculation.
Factors Affecting Cooling Load (Rooms, Occupancy, Glass Area)
- Number of rooms and zones: More rooms need careful airflow distribution and zoning.
- Occupancy: Offices, restaurants and conference rooms carry higher people loads.
- Glass area: Large windows and glass facades add major solar heat, especially facing west.
- Equipment and lighting: Computers, kitchen equipment and decorative lighting add load.
- Duct heat gain: Ducts passing through hot spaces add load unless well insulated.

Ductwork Design for Ducted ACs
Good air conditioner ductwork is what separates a quiet, even-cooling ducted system from a noisy, uneven one. Compress India designs and fabricates ductwork in-house for every project.
Duct Sizing & Layout
Ducts are sized for the right air velocity and volume to each room. A well-planned layout minimises bends and length, reducing pressure loss, noise and energy use.
GI, Pre-Insulated & Flexible Ducts
- GI (galvanised iron) ducts: Durable and rigid, ideal for main trunk lines and commercial projects.
- Pre-insulated ducts: Lightweight panels with built-in insulation, offering fast installation and low heat gain.
- Flexible ducts: Used for short connections to diffusers, making fitting easier in tight ceiling spaces.
Duct Insulation & Condensation Prevention
All supply ducts are insulated with closed-cell foam or similar material, with sealed joints. This prevents heat gain, condensation and water stains on the false ceiling, which matters especially in humid Mumbai.
Supply Diffuser Selection (Linear Slot, Square & Round)
- Linear slot diffusers: Sleek, minimal lines that suit premium homes and designer interiors.
- Square diffusers: Practical and efficient for offices and commercial ceilings.
- Round diffusers: Ideal for high ceilings and large open spaces.
Return Air Path & Plenum Design
A correctly sized return path, through a return duct or ceiling plenum, is essential. Poor return design causes noise, pressure imbalance and reduced cooling.
Noise Control in Ductwork
Correct air velocity, acoustic lining, flexible connectors at the unit and proper diffuser selection keep noise low in bedrooms, boardrooms and hotel rooms.
Zoning & Individual Room Control
Zoning lets a single ducted AC system deliver room-by-room comfort and savings.
Motorized Zone Dampers
Motorised dampers open and close the airflow to each zone automatically, directing cooling only where it is needed.
Room-Wise Thermostats
Each zone gets its own thermostat, so bedrooms, living areas and study rooms can be set to different temperatures.
Smart Zoning Controllers
Smart controllers coordinate dampers and the indoor unit, adjust fan speed and allow app-based control and scheduling for each room.
Fresh Air & Indoor Air Quality with Ducted ACs
Ducted systems can do more than cool: they can bring in fresh, filtered air.
Fresh Air Intake Connection
A fresh air duct can be connected to the return side of the unit, bringing filtered outdoor air into the space. This is valuable in closed offices, conference rooms and apartments with sealed windows.
Higher-Grade Air Filtration
Ducted systems can accommodate higher-grade filters, such as MERV-rated or HEPA-type filters, to capture fine dust, pollen and PM 2.5 particles.
Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV)
An ERV exchanges heat and moisture between outgoing stale air and incoming fresh air, bringing in fresh air while reducing the extra cooling load. It works as an efficient heating and ventilation system alongside your ducted AC.
Energy Efficiency of Ducted ACs
Inverter Technology & Power Savings
Inverter ducted AC units adjust compressor speed to the actual load, cutting power use by up to 30–50% compared with fixed-speed units in homes and offices with varying occupancy.
Reducing Duct Leakage & Heat Gain
Sealed joints, proper insulation and short duct runs through unconditioned spaces reduce leakage and heat gain, which can otherwise waste a significant share of cooling.
Energy Efficiency Ratings
Ducted units are compared using EER, ISEER or seasonal efficiency figures. Our team compares these across brands and matches them to your usage hours.
Refrigerants Used (R32 / R410A)
Most modern ducted ACs use R32 or R410A. R32 offers high efficiency and lower global warming potential, while R410A remains common in larger ducted and VRF units.
Benefits of Ducted ACs
Concealed, Invisible Installation
The indoor unit and ducts stay hidden. Only slim diffusers and grilles are visible, keeping walls and ceilings clean.
Uniform Cooling Across Multiple Rooms
Diffusers placed across each room deliver even ducted cooling without cold spots or direct draughts.
One System for Several Rooms
A single ducted unit can serve several rooms, reducing the number of outdoor units on your balcony or facade.
Fresh Air & Better Indoor Air Quality
Fresh air connections and higher-grade filtration improve indoor air quality, which other room ACs cannot easily match.
Quiet Operation Inside Rooms
The blower sits away from living spaces, so rooms stay whisper-quiet, ideal for bedrooms, boardrooms and hotel rooms.
Premium Interior Aesthetics
Ducted ACs let architects and designers keep a clean, uncluttered look, making them the standard choice for luxury homes and high-end commercial interiors.
Limitations of Ducted ACs
Requires False Ceiling & Ceiling Depth
Ducted units and ducts need a false ceiling with enough depth, typically about 300–450 mm depending on the unit and duct sizes.
Higher Installation Cost
Ductwork, insulation, diffusers and ceiling coordination make ducted air conditioning system price higher than wall mounted split ACs.
Duct Heat Gain & Leakage Losses
Poorly insulated or leaking ducts waste cooling. Correct design and execution keep these losses low.
Limited Room Control Without Zoning
Without zoning, all rooms served by one unit share one temperature. Zoning dampers solve this but add cost.
Needs Planning at the Design Stage
Ducted systems are best planned before false ceiling and interior work begins. Retrofitting later is possible but more complex.
Ducted AC vs Split AC
| Parameter | Ducted AC | Hi Wall Split AC |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Concealed, only grilles visible | Indoor unit visible on wall |
| Rooms per unit | Several | One |
| Outdoor units needed | Fewer | One per room |
| Fresh air option | Yes | No |
| False ceiling | Required | Not required |
| Upfront cost | Higher | Lower |
A split AC is the simplest option for homes without ductwork or a false ceiling. A ducted AC is the better choice for premium interiors, multiple rooms and cleaner facades.
Ducted AC vs Cassette AC
| Parameter | Ducted AC | Cassette AC |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Only diffusers and grilles | Square or round panel visible |
| Coverage | Multiple rooms per unit | One zone per unit |
| Ceiling depth | Higher | Moderate |

Cassettes suit open offices and showrooms needing quick, zone-wise cooling. Ducted ACs suit homes, cabins and interiors where a fully concealed look is preferred.
Ducted AC vs VRF / VRV System
| Parameter | Ducted AC | VRF / VRV System |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | One indoor unit per outdoor unit | Many indoor units on one outdoor system |
| Scale | Homes, floors, individual zones | Entire buildings, multiple floors |
| Individual room control | With zoning | Built in for each indoor unit |
| Efficiency | High | Very high at varied part loads |
| Project cost | Lower | Higher |
For villas, apartments and single floors, ducted split systems offer excellent value. For multi-floor buildings, a VRF system with ducted indoor units is often the better long-term investment. Compress India designs both.

Ducted AC Installation Guide
Ducted AC installation is a coordinated project involving HVAC, interiors, electrical and plumbing work. Here is how Compress India executes every job.
Planning at the Interior & Design Stage
We work with your architect or interior designer before the false ceiling is built, finalising unit locations, duct routes, ceiling levels, diffuser positions and service access.
Indoor Unit Location & Service Access
The indoor unit is placed centrally to keep duct runs short, often above a corridor, bathroom or wardrobe. A removable access panel is provided for filter cleaning and servicing.
Ductwork Fabrication & Installation
Ducts are fabricated to the approved design, supported with hangers, sealed at every joint and insulated to prevent condensation and heat gain.
Diffuser & Return Grille Placement
Diffusers are positioned for even air throw without draughts on beds, sofas or desks. Return grilles are placed to ensure smooth return airflow and minimal noise.
Drain Piping & Drain Pump
Drain pipes run with a proper slope and insulation to a nearby drain point. Where gravity drainage is not possible, a drain pump is installed and tested.
Copper Piping & Outdoor Unit Placement
Copper pipes are sized to specification, fully insulated and routed neatly. The ducted aircon outdoor unit is placed in a ventilated location on a sturdy stand or bracket.
Electrical Wiring & Controls
Dedicated power supply, correctly rated cables, MCBs or isolators and earthing are provided, along with control wiring for thermostats and zoning.
Testing & Air Balancing
After pressure testing, vacuuming and gas charging, we measure airflow at each diffuser and adjust dampers so every room receives the right cooling.
Ducted AC Service, Maintenance & AMC
Filter Cleaning Frequency
Clean filters every 2–4 weeks in homes and more often in busy offices. Clogged filters reduce airflow to every room.
Coil & Blower Cleaning
The evaporator coil and blower are cleaned 2–3 times a year to maintain airflow and efficiency.
Duct Cleaning & Sanitization
Ducts collect dust and microbes over time. We recommend professional duct cleaning and sanitisation every 1–2 years, or more often in dusty or healthcare environments.
Drain Line & Drain Pump Checks
Drain lines, trays and pumps are flushed and tested at every service to prevent ceiling leaks.
Gas Pressure & Leak Checks
Refrigerant pressures are checked and joints inspected. Any leak is repaired before recharging.

Q1: What is a ducted air conditioner?
A ducted air conditioner is a concealed AC whose indoor unit sits above the false ceiling and delivers cool air through ducts and diffusers to one or more rooms, with a separate outdoor unit outside.
Q2: How does a ducted AC work?
The indoor unit draws return air, cools it over the evaporator coil and pushes it through supply ducts to diffusers in each room. The outdoor unit releases the absorbed heat outside.
Q3: What is the difference between a ducted AC and a split AC?
A split AC has a visible indoor unit that cools one room. A ducted AC is hidden in the ceiling and can cool several rooms through ducts, with fewer outdoor units and a cleaner interior look.
Q4: Is a ducted AC better than a VRF system?
For a single home, apartment or floor, a ducted split system usually offers better value. For multi-floor buildings needing individual control in many rooms, a VRF system with ducted indoor units is often more efficient.
Q5: How many tons of ducted AC do I need for my home or office?
As a guide, a 2 BHK needs about 3 ton and a 3 BHK about 4–5 ton, while offices depend on occupancy and equipment. Compress India provides an accurate heat load calculation for every project.
Q6: How much false ceiling depth is required for a ducted AC?
Most ducted systems need about 300–450 mm of ceiling depth, depending on the unit model and duct sizes. Slim low-static units can fit in shallower bulkheads.
Q7: What is low, medium and high static in ducted ACs?
Static refers to how much duct resistance the blower can overcome. Low static units suit short ducts, medium static suits several rooms, and high static suits long duct networks and large spaces.
Q8: Can a ducted AC cool each room at a different temperature?
Yes, with zoning. Motorised dampers and room thermostats let each room or zone run at its own temperature, and rooms not in use can be switched off.
Q9: Does a ducted AC provide fresh air?
It can. A fresh air duct or an energy recovery ventilator can be connected to bring in filtered outdoor air, improving indoor air quality.
Q10: How often should ducts be cleaned?
Professional duct cleaning is recommended every 1–2 years for homes and offices, and more often in healthcare or dusty environments.
Q11: What is the price of a ducted AC in India?
Ducted AC units typically start around ₹70,000 for small low-static models and go up to ₹3,50,000 or more for larger capacities, before ductwork and installation. Contact Compress India for a complete project quote.
