Actuators

What Are Actuators in HVAC?

An actuator in an HVAC system is a device that oversees the movement of dampers, valves, and fans, playing a crucial role in regulating the flow of chilled water. Actuators act as the link between the control system and the mechanical components within HVAC systems.

Although actuators are classified as accessories and HVAC systems can technically function without them, they struggle to maintain the desired temperature effectively. These devices connect to various types of valves in the chilled water line and receive instructions from the thermostat. When the desired temperature is achieved, the thermostat instructs the actuator to close the valves, and the actuator responds accordingly.

Actuators can be categorized into three main types based on their application:

  • Electric Actuators: Commonly found in all HVAC systems.
  • Hydraulic Actuators: Typically used in hydraulic systems and heavy lifting equipment.
  • Pneumatic Actuators: Often used in production lines and the pharmaceutical industry.

In this discussion, we will delve into some of the most commonly used types of actuators in HVAC systems:

  • Motorized Butterfly Valve Actuators
  • Motorized Ball Valve Actuators
  • Pressure Independent Control Valve (PICV) Actuators
  • Damper Actuators
